Using Stencils to Create Art Prints For Hanging and Decorating

When we think of stencil art, we often picture an image painted on a wall. But have you ever considered using stencils to create art prints to hang on the wall? Well, it's a great way to decorate. You can use unique designs to match the theme of any room and choose colors in the print to match any décor. Your framed artwork can be totally customized to fit your space!

There are many ways to create art prints with stencils. Let's start with the basics. It's always good to keep it simple, right? So, the easiest way to create stencil art is by using a single design.

Consider a single design of a Fleur de lis. This would be a very easy project and yet lend a classic touch to any room. Your color choices are endless so you can blend in paints to match any décor. And don't forget the background color. You can keep it plain white and make the colors you have chosen for the Fleur de lis pop or you can paint a background color to accent those in the Fleur de lis.

Here are some other ideas if you are into a different style: if you have a tropical décor, find a palm tree or shell stencil pattern; for a feminine surrounding, try a single rose bud stencil design; for a child's room, paint some farm or zoo animals: for the kitchen, look for fruits, vegetables or some nice tea pots or maybe a wine bottle and grapes: jungle theme - try some playful tree frogs. By creating your own art, you are in complete control of the style, themes, colors and size.

Now, let's step it up a notch. It's easy to combine two or more stencils to create a more complex art piece or grouping of art works. Looking for themed collections will help you come up with plenty of ideas for groupings in your next masterpiece.

Let's take the example of the Fleur de lis single print mentioned above. There are many different Fleur de lis designs available. Many are nice compliments to each other. Or maybe use the same design and color with different colors. Consider two or even four different Fleur de Lis prints and hang them in a grouping on a wall. What kind of statement that would be!

Feng Shui and Oriental prints are very popular. Have you ever thought to yourself? Why not? It 's really easy with the models. Here you will find many great oriental pattern developed and also a lot of stencils for symbols such as friendship, love, peace, harmony, longevity, long life and many, many more. Combine one image (like bamboo or cranes) with several symbols lined up along the left or right hand side of the print. Create two matching prints - one with bamboo and one with cranes. Now you are really using your imagination and combining many stencils to create some complex art.

Just a side hint: For oriental prints I like to create a background that looks like grass paper. I start with plain, smooth white vellum (thick and smooth with no texture). The entire surface of the paper is painted a very light off white or cream color. When the paint is thoroughly dry, a thick coat of tan (a darker color than the first color) is applied to the entire surface. Working quickly before the paint dries, run a flat comb in horizontal and then vertical lines. You can buy a tool at most craft supply stores to create this effect but a flat comb works too.

By the way, don't confine yourself to themes. Be bold and search around for designs that might help you create some eclectic art. You know, our rooms are rarely specific to a defined style. After all, House and Gardens has not come to the movie next month. So be creative and put together multiple styles.

May be interesting to see what kind of card is best suited for creating stencil art prints. You want a document that a flat surface so that the pattern on the surface so that the edges of the image is sharp and clean it. You also want a matte finish that easilyaccept paint. Make sure it is heavyweight and thick so that the wet paint won't cause the paper to bubble and stretch.

I would recommend Strathmore Windpower Bristol Pads (either the smooth or the vellum). This is what I use. Just a fun note about the Strathmore Windpower line of Artist Papers, they are made with 100% wind power - a pollution-free, renewable energy resource.

Art is about being free to create. Now! Go! Create and enjoy decorating with stencils!
